Free Spirits brings Washington Spirit fans into the broader Free DC movement for local self-governance and statehood. I co-started the group with fellow Free DC volunteers during the league's midseason break in 2025, as a way to channel stadium energy into political solidarity with the city we share.

Together with supporter groups like the Spirit Squadron, Free Spirits helped turn the 51st minute of home matches into a stadium-wide “Free D.C.” chant—a nod to DC becoming the 51st state. Volunteers have also handed out thousands of yellow cards with chant instructions and QR codes linking fans to Free DC, so people can leave the match with a next step.

The project remains an ongoing collaboration among fans, squadron members, and Free DC organizers.
